I cut my hair... sort of cut my hair! I got my first Deva Cut almost two weeks ago on October 7th at Curltopia Salon in Smyrna, GA! I was super excited and extremely nervous about getting any of my hair cut since I'm on a grow out phase. I had the opportunity to be a hair model and get my hair cut by a stylist who is Deva Certified through Devachan in NYC. Who can get a Deva Cut? Anyone with a curl or wave! Frizz is just a curl waiting to happen! There are different levels of Deva stylist depending on their certifications.
The Deva cutting technique is a revolutionary method for cutting curly hair whereas most traditional hair cutting techniques were created for straight hair. The advantage of Deva Cuts is that it's customized to work with your unique curl pattern. This curl exclusive cut requires special training to learn the technique. The hair is cut dry because we wear our hair dry not wet. Curly hair and its spring factor can be misinterpreted while wet. Cutting the hair in its natural form, while dry, curl by curl allows the stylist to sculpt each client's hair, according to their individual curl, look, and style because no two curls are alike!

My Stylist’s name was Barry! Barry is a Master Stylist. We had a consultation before any cutting began. She asked what my concerns were with my hair, how I normally wear it, what products do I use, and other questions so she could get a better understanding of my hair. My hair was styled in a three day wash & go! My biggest concern was shape! I think a lot of people who see my hair on YouTube or in pictures love the shape. I loved it but I often had to pull and tug curls and sections to get my hair the way I wanted. More importantly, I didn’t like the flat, rooftop appearance on the top of my head. Look at the top of my hair on the picture above and below!

I recommend, as well as Curltopia, when getting a Deva Cut that you arrive on the day of your appointment with your hair with light products on and dried naturally! Do not pin your hair up or pull it back. You want to avoid as much manipulation to your curls as possible so that the structure of your cut can be accurate. Barry and I decided that she would take off a little length from the back(my hair grows faster in the back), the middle, and a little off the top to give me more of a rounded shape. Here are a few pictures of the finished look:
