Box Braids: What's Old is New

If you've been following me on InstaGram or Youtube lately, you know I recently installed Box Braids in my hair. I've been braiding my hair for years but this was my first time putting box braids in my own hair. This style seems to be all the rage this summer with the likes of Beyonce and other celebrities rocking the look. I wore box braids as a child so the style isn't new to me.
2pac & Janet Jackson in Poetic Justice
Growing up, Poetic Justice was one of my favorite movies. It starred two of my favorite people, Janet Jackson and 2Pac! I loved the look on Janet! Our facial structure is similar and since her character loved poetry and hair, I found myself drawn to her even more. This past saturday I decided that I needed a break from Free Spirit and decide to braid my hair. I bought about eight packs of 100% Kanekalon Jumbo Silky Braid Hair (colors: 1 & 33) and used five. The hair itself was long so I didn't have to add additional hair to each braid for length.

It took about ten hours to finish. Once completed, I decided to dip the  braids in hot water to seal. I made sure to not braid too tightly around my edges. Many complain that their hair is heavy after getting these braids. I think styling my own braids kept me aware of any potential heaviness or tightness. The braids are waist length and so far I am enjoying them.

Here are a few pictures of how I wore my braids this week:

I also posted a video right after I finished them. Feel free to check it out as well:

Have you worn box braids or are you considering this look?

  1. I am in a protective style myself, have been since late last year because I am in a hair challenge. I have very long box twists (?) and I love them. They are light and easy to style. Thank you for posting this- the style looks great on you.

  2. Hi I love your site. Its so wonderful. I'm getting box braids Saturday. I informed the girl that doing my hair that I wanted my ends sealed with hot water. She informed me that the ends would be frizzy and that the "braids" would hold. Is this true? I don't want my ends burnt...it takes me back to when I was in elementary school when the ends would have lent balls on them at the end of the day. What's your advice? Thanks Tk,
